Authored by Pickatrail.com Mexico is a country in North America located south of the United States that borders the Gulf of Mexico on the east coast and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Mexico is a country that has a rich cultural history that can trace back to its Native Indian pre-history, with Mayan and Aztec ancestry as well as their European roots. The European Spaniards became part of the Mexican landscape, leaving a legacy of architectural structures stretching throughout the country. The numerous plazas, churches and many public buildings bear witness to the era of the Colonial (Spanish) occupation, with many buildings dating back several or more centuries. Each of the Mexican States boasts it own treasures, whether architectural, archeological or nature. The Gulf States are renowned for their beaches, such as those in Cancun; while on Pacific Coast Baja California is a popular resort and beach area, as is Acapulco where the cliffs along the beaches provide spectators with daredevil acrobatic dives from the edge of a promontory. For archeological buffs, there are wonderful reminders of the Mayan and Aztec; and the Olmec who preceded the Mayans and more than half a dozen other groups that left temples, pyramids, astronomical observatories, sculpture, petroglyphs and more. And whose cultural heritage is steeped in mathematics and some with poetry. These extraordinary people are today part of the mixture of Hispanic-European peoples that came to the Americas seeking gold and other riches. The ancient people can be explored in one of the many sites along beaches, in jungles, in the mountains and other areas across Mexico as there are at least 500 archeological sites to be explored. There are also areas declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as the Historic Center and Xochimilco Ecological Park with its "floating gardens." This is a country of diversity with a cuisine that varies depending upon the region. In the Yucatan there is a tradition of cuisine that has been carried forward from the days of the Mayans and has become integrated into the modern cuisine. This is a country full of traditions and festivals, numerous crafts and beautiful scenery from the desert to the mountaintop, from the oceans to the lakes and in the southern parts of the country in the jungles and rainforests. Each of these diverse regions offers its own ecological majesty, plus a pink flamingo sanctuary as a haven for these phenomenal creatures. Swimming with dolphins, hiking, biking, sailing, surfing, snorkeling, camping, horseback riding and so much more is there to be enjoyed.
