Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

Authored by Pickatrail.com
Trentino-Alto Adige is a mountainous region bordered by Austria and Switzerland. Language in the provinces of this northernmost area of Italy is both German and Italian, as the northern section of the region was actually given to Italy as the result of the Treaty of Saint-Germain in 1919, after World War I. A program of 'Italianization' was initiated, which created a blending of the two diverse cultures. The region of Trentino-Alto Adige is separated by the River Adige Valley with Bolzano province retaining more Germanic influences and Trentino province to the south retaining more of the Italian influences; with the architecture in some places suggesting Teutonic characteristics. To the north, the Dolomite Mountains stretch to the Alps creating a wonderful venue for skiers and sports enthusiasts of every ilk; with the sport dependant upon whether visiting in winter or summer. The region is also known for its health producing thermal waters, or spas, which are plentiful. Wonderful, lovely lakes abound as Lake Caldaro, Lake Ledro and part of Lake Garda in the southern region. The capital city of Trento abounds with museums, includes castles and churches. Museums in the capital city include art, heritage, archeology, music and technology as well as historical museums. The region has three National Parks to explore, the beautiful countryside of the Adige Valley and the dense forests on the slopes of the Dolomites all combine to make the region a magnificent natural spectacle. Whether seeking glaciers, waterfalls, trails, parks, gardens, canyons or caves, Trentino will satisfy your expectations. Some of Italy's most beautiful towns and villages are in this province, while several are among those winning the Orange Flag Tourism award. If you are a wine lover, take the Strada del Vino in the region, an excursion in itself. The cuisine in Trentino will vary, with wienerschnitzel and sauerkraut more prevalent in the north than pasta. Polenta is said to be wonderful in the region, and Speck, a sausage, originated here. If you are a history buff, there are over 70 castles in the region, archaeological sites, dozens of museums, churches, medieval influences, forts and more.
